Probo Medical's Ultrasound Applications Specialist, John Zentz, traveled to Liberia, Africa, to deliver life-changing training and support to a clinic that had recently received two donated ultrasound machines through an ultrasound donation program.
Typically, our applications team offers virtual ultrasound training to healthcare facilities upon receiving new equipment. However, due to limited internet access and language barriers at this Liberian hospital, Probo could not meet the clinic's needs for these virtual training sessions. Recognizing the critical need, John Zentz was asked to travel to Liberia to deliver hands-on, in-person training that was funded by a generous donor in early March of 2025.
A prenatal patient serves as a model during ultrasound training with John Zentz and four medical staff from two clinics.
The clinic in Liberia operates in conditions vastly different from those of the U.S.. With limited access to prenatal care, the region faces high maternal and infant mortality rates. These donated ultrasound machines were provided to address these urgent challenges, enabling the early detection of complications during pregnancy and childbirth in areas where advanced hospitals are hours away.
John traveled not just with his expertise but also with two suitcases filled with medical supplies for the clinic and the orphans living at the mission compound. These donations, sourced by John's wife and colleagues, were warmly welcomed by the dedicated healthcare workers and local community members.
During the week-long training, John worked closely with four passionate nurses who had little prior ultrasound experience. Over six intensive days, their dedication shone as they quickly developed essential scanning skills. From taking meticulous notes to mastering techniques with determination, the nurses ended each day having made remarkable progress.
Together, John and his trainees scanned numerous patients, laying the groundwork for sustainable and consistent care delivery. Their training doesn’t just impact the here and now; it’s an investment in the clinic’s ability to provide lifesaving care for years to come.
Making a Lasting Difference
Through John Zentz’s efforts, Probo Medical has helped bring accessible ultrasound services to a community that previously had no access to this essential technology. This experience highlighted the importance of accessible medical training, demonstrating how technology and education can transform healthcare in underserved communities.
At the heart of this mission are the people who made it possible. We extend our deepest gratitude to John, the dedicated nurses he trained, the generous donor, and everyone else who contributed to making this project a success. Through this collaboration, Probo Medical continues to fulfill our mission of enabling those who heal to deliver exceptional care, no matter where they are in the world.
