The Rise of Ultrasound Elastography<\/h2>\n

Based on calls and requests from our customers, we\u2019re finding that elastography is quickly becoming one of the more popular emerging technologies in ultrasound.<\/p>\n

And based on calls from manufacturers, they\u2019re on it. We keep getting excited calls from them\u00a0saying \u201cWe Have Elastography on another model!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, of course, the their\u00a0next sentence is \u201cSooooo\u2026.\u00a0How many more can you sell next month?\u201d<\/p>\n

Well, they don\u2019t ALL say that\u2026 or maybe I\u2019m just feeling that vibe.<\/p>\n

Anyway, the point is that Elastography\u00a0is making its way to the mainstream.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0rise in popularity is the result\u00a0of a few factors: price, availability, and expanded clinical applications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

\n\t\t\"Elastography\"\n\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div><\/div>

Elastography is traditionally known for its use\u00a0with breast ultrasound in helping identify\u00a0malignant vs benign breast lesions. These days, it\u00a0is commonly found as a\u00a0routine part of a breast examination\u00a0because it typically results in a\u00a0reduced number of biopsies.<\/p>\n

More recently, however, elastography has become more affordable and is found on many ultrasound machines. Because of this, clinicians are finding new ways to use ultrasound elastography, such as identifying liver, thyroid, and prostate cancers. Now,\u00a0elastography has found its way into the MSK field.<\/p>\n

What is Elastography?<\/h3>\n

In short, elastography maps the \u201celastic properties\u201d (stiffness) in tissue. This is important because diseased tissue is most often stiffer than normal tissue.\u00a0Using various methods, the ultrasound can display or quantify various levels of stiffness in tissue.<\/p>\n

Think\u00a0visual palpation.<\/em><\/p>\n

There are two common elastography techniques found on ultrasound machines: Compression (strain) and Shear Wave:<\/p>\n

Compression<\/strong><\/em>, or \u201cstrain<\/em>\u201c,\u00a0is the most affordable and commonly found ultrasound elastography option. It is\u00a0performed by manually compressing tissue with an ultrasound transducer, and the ultrasound color-codes the various levels\u00a0of stiffness. The drawback to this method is that it doesn\u2019t provide quantitative results, as the amount of compression applied cannot be measured by the ultrasound. Still, it\u2019s found to be very helpful and is considered the \u201cnew palpation\u201d method to identifying diseased tissue.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Shear Wave<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is the more advanced method. It\u2019s considered more beneficial because it\u00a0provides quantitative results to the elasticity of tissue, which can be especially helpful when comparing tissue stiffness over time. Shear Wave Elastography is\u00a0a more complex and advanced method because it\u00a0uses a\u00a0transducer that can perform a specific task when sending and receiving an ultrasonic signal, which allows it to measure a specific amount of stiffness. At this time, it\u00a0is a much more expensive option and not necessarily advantageous in situations where\u00a0the standard manual compression method will suffice to identify tissue stiffness.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

Which Ultrasounds have Elastography?<\/h3>\n

For the common compression technique, a largely increasing number of ultrasound machines have an elastography option. This includes many affordable mid-range ultrasound systems, including newer systems from Chison and SonoScape. However, you typically will not find it on lower-end color systems.<\/p>\n

A\u00a0small percentage of ultrasound machines have\u00a0Shear Wave or similar technologies.\u00a0It is a more advanced technology, and thereby is currently found on only high-end, advanced, expensive ultrasound machines from\u00a0manufacturers such as\u00a0Philips,\u00a0GE,\u00a0Toshiba, and\u00a0Siemens.<\/p>\n

All systems are good for basic qualitative analysis, identifying a nodule and determining its stiffness compared to the surrounding tissue.\u00a0For most of our customers, the standard strain imaging\u00a0provides them what they need.<\/p>\n
